The E-4B serves as the National Airborne Operations Center (NAOC) and is a key component of the National Military Command System for the President, the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In case of national emergency or destruction of ground command and control centers, the aircraft provides a highly survivable command, control and communications center to direct U.S. forces, execute emergency war orders and coordinate actions by civil authorities. The combined command of the NAOC and the 595th Command and Control Group is now known as Mission 1, based at Offutt AFB. (Source: USAF) (Photo Courtesy: Ronald Shankland)
This important mission started with the National Emergency Airborne Command Post (NEACP) in the 1960s. The National Airborne Operations Center (NAOC) mission then started on the E-4A in 1974 and evolved into the E-4B mission today. The first B model was delivered to the Air Force in January 1980, and by 1985 all aircraft were converted to B models. All E-4B aircraft are assigned to the 595th Command and Control Group (C2G) at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. The 595th C2G was aligned under Eighth Air Force and Air Force Global Strike Command in 2016. (Source: USAF).
While the fleet of the E-4B is stationed at Offutt AFB, Nebraska, at least one E-4B NAOC is always on 24-hour alert, 7-days a week, with a global watch team at one of many selected bases throughout the world. The planning committee is excited to share this celebration with our neighbors.
In May 2022, the Air Force times covered the E4-B and its critical mission set. You can find the link to the full article here, along with a link to the video coverage.
